Professor Shiying Hou, Ph.D. Supervisor of School of Electrical Engineering at Chongqing University, was elected as the 7th Council chairperson of Electrics Research Association of CHEU. This is the first time for professors at CQU holding the highest post of this association since it was established, and professor Hou is the first chairperson from universities in western region.
Highly dedicated to education and research, professor Hou has established a reputation as an effective teacher while conducting courses in electrotechnics for 36 years. From Hou’s perspective, a teacher’s responsibility is not only to pass knowledge to students, but more importantly to enable students to analyze and solve problems with open mind and innovative thought. She encourages students to integrate theory and practice in every experiment to enhance their comprehension of the knowledge gained in class.
Professor Hou has mentored 1 doctoral student and more than 40 postgraduates, published more than 50 SCI and EI journal papers, participated in and presided over 3 projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2 state key laboratory construction and research projects, and 2 basic research projects supported by Chongqing Science and Technology Commission. Decades of scientific research has injected a lot of "vitality" into her teaching work. By her persistent pursuit of excellence, the series of electrical engineering courses she taught won honors such as Chongqing Excellent Digital Resources Sharing Course. In Hou’s view, only by broadening students’ horizons can they bypass the classroom, let the accumulation of theory go ahead of “teaching”, and create a broad world for them.
