From August 28 to 30, 2024, the 7th National Teaching Competition for Young University Faculty was held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, co-organized by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions and the Ministry of Education, and hosted by All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the Department of Teacher Work under the Ministry of Education. Dr. Sun Potao, a young faculty member from the School of Electrical Engineering, demonstrated solid teaching skills, outstanding instructional ability, innovative teaching concepts, and engaging classroom presentations, earning him the Second Prize in the Engineering Group of this national competition. This achievement marks a historic breakthrough for our school in the history of this prestigious event!
The National Teaching Competition for Young University Faculty steadfastly emphasizes the fundamental principle of "fostering virtue through education", guided by the spirit of educator excellence. It adheres to the philosophy of "delivering an exemplary course", fully leveraging its role as a benchmark in enhancing faculty quality. Adopting a broad participation model, the event features tiered selection processes, with local contests tailored to regional conditions. Statistics show that over 300,000 young faculty members from 2,028 universities nationwide participated in various rounds.
The finals brought together approximately 160 outstanding young faculty representatives across disciplines for a vibrant showcase of teaching prowess. As China’s most inclusive, comprehensive, and large-scale high-level teaching competition, it is also renowned for its rigorous standards, intensive preparation demands, and fierce competition.
Profile of Dr. Sun Potao
Dr. Sun, a dedicated educator, teaches undergraduate courses High Voltage Technology and Circuit Theory since joining the university in 2016. He actively contributes to curriculum innovation, participating in the development of National First-Class Undergraduate Course (High Voltage Technology), Chongqing First-Class Undergraduate Course, Chongqing Curriculum Ideology and Politics Demonstration Course. Committed to student-centered, research-integrated education, he has honed his teaching skills relentlessly. His accolades include: Special Prize for 7th Chongqing Young Faculty Teaching Competition, 1st Place (Engineering Group) for 9th Chongqing University Teaching Skills Competition, "Most Popular Teacher in Chongqing University " (12th edition, student-voted), National Second Prize in this competition.
Introduction to the National First-Class Course High Voltage Technology
Originating from the courses High Voltage Engineering and High Voltage Seminars pioneered by electrical engineering authorities Wang Jiqiang and Jiang Zejia in 1949, this course evolved under the stewardship of luminaries like Prof. Yan Huailiang, Prof. Gu Leguan, Academician Sun Caixin, and Prof. Yang Baochu. After 70 years of refinement, it was designated a National Elite Course (2010) and National First-Class Offline Course (2021).
The course team is an elite unit characterized by its well-structured composition, rigorous scholarship, progressive pedagogical philosophy, and prolific achievements, honored with the title of "Chongqing Curriculum Ideology and Politics Exemplary Teaching Team" in 2023. The teaching team consists of 10 members, including 7 recipients of prestigious academic honors such as the Yangtze River Scholar Distinguished Professor, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, National "Ten Thousand Talents Plan" Leading Scientific and Technological Innovation Talent, Young Yangtze River Scholar, and Chongqing Talent Program Outstanding Young Talents. The team has secured principal investigator roles in 1 major provincial-level teaching reform project and 2 municipal-level teaching innovation initiatives in Chongqing, while actively participating in 1 national-level New Engineering Research and Practice Project. In student mentorship, the team has guided undergraduates to get remarkable achievements in over 30 national awards in premier innovation competitions including: China "Internet+" College Student Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition, “Challenge Cup" National Entrepreneurship Competition, Micro-Entrepreneurship Initiative, “Youth Innovation" Entrepreneurship Contest, 4 gold medals in national finals, 4 team members honored as Chongqing Municipal Distinguished Innovation & Entrepreneurship Mentors.
